Il n’y a pas si longtemps, le nom guillemots faisait référence à une espèce d’oiseaux de la famille des pingouins. Mais aujourd’hui la première image qu’évoque ce drôle de patronyme, c'est celle d’un quatuor musical anglais déjanté, n’ayant pas peur d’improviser un solo de perceuse électrique au beau milieu d’un concert.
Ils viennent de sortir un premier album From the cliffs, qui offre un patchwork de sons pop et électroniques, aux arrangements excentriques pleins de surprises.
Les quatre membres des Guillemots forment un étrange tableau, mêlant plusieurs nationalités et autant de tonalités musicales éclectiques. Le chanteur est anglais, il s’installe aux claviers et l’étendue de son organe vocal va du tendre chuchotement aux hurlements désespérés, il est accompagné d’un batteur écossais chapeauté, d’un guitariste bruitiste brésilien et d’une élégante contrebassiste canadienne.

Le groupe porte le nom d’un oiseau peu connu, avez-vous déjà vu de vrais guillemots ? Avez-vous encore le temps d’aller observer des oiseaux ?
Oui j’ai vu beaucoup de guillemots quand j’étais plus jeune, quand nous partions en vacances sur les côtes britanniques (Pays de Galles, Northumberland, etc...). On en voyait souvent nicher sur les falaises. Mais cela fait très longtemps que je ne suis pas allé en voir. Pour l’instant mon planning est plutôt chargé… Même notre groupe arrive avant les oiseaux quand tu tapes guillemots sur Google. Je suis un peu gêné, mais je pense que les pingouins ne vérifient pas sur internet.

Comment s’est passé l’enregistrement avec Bryan Mills (ex Divine Comedy) ?
Bryan est génial. On a produit le premier EP ensemble, au moment où le groupe venait juste d’être mis en place, les autres musiciens n’étaient pas encore prêts à rebondir sur mes idées, donc Bryan m’a aidé à le faire. Il m’a vraiment encouragé à garder beaucoup d’instruments acoustiques sur l’album, ce qui était bien, car je me battais toujours pour intégrer plus de sons électroniques. Du coup on passait beaucoup de temps à argumenter, ce qui a rendu l’enregistrement très intéressant. Bryan a monté un super groupe, les Kittens. Il compose de très belles ballades de marins solitaires. 

Comment faites vous pour survivre à l’intérêt démesuré des médias ?
On l’ignore. Mais on n' a pas autant de presse que par exemple, les Arctics Monkeys, donc ça va. Chaque année, un millier de nouveaux groupes passent par ce phénomène de nouveau groupe branché, ça ne veut plus rien dire. On est fier de notre musique, ce qui est notre motivation initiale - on a juste à vérifier que l’on ne devient pas paresseux. 

Quelle est l’inspiration pour les paroles, et que composes-tu en premier, les textes ou la musique ?
La musique arrive généralement en premier, mais parfois ce sont les paroles. Il n’y a pas de règle. Ce qui est magique à propos des chansons, c’est que tu ne comprends jamais vraiment comment ça fonctionne.

Tous les membres du groupe ont un parcours musical différent, comment réussissez-vous à travailler en harmonie ?
On en a aucune idée, tout ce que l’on comprend c’est que ça sonne juste, depuis la première fois qu’on a joué ensemble, ça nous semble très naturel. Comme si notre façon de jouer nous avait amenés à nous rencontrer. On est comme les quatre pièces d’un puzzle. On joue ensemble de la musique qui nous entraîne dans ce monde de rêves.

En un mot, comment décrirais-tu vos concerts?
Hum....! Ouais, "hum!".... hum avec un peu de pop , ou pop avec un peu de hum....

Up till now, when guillemots were mentioned, everybody was referring to a specie of small penguins. But nowadays, this word is mostly used in conversations about a new indie band, the new hot ticket from England. The Guillemots are an eccentric music quartet who is not afraid to indulge its audience with a power drill solo during a gig.
The band have just released its debut album From the cliffs, a multi-layered patchwork of pop and electronic sounds, with eccentric arrangements full of surprises.
The four members of Guillemots mix different nationalities, and as many eclectic musical styles. The singer is british, he also plays keyboards and his vocal spectrum stretches from sweet whispers to desperate roars, he comes with a scout drummer who likes to wear hats, a brazilian noisist guitar player, and a very elegant canadian bassist.

How come you choose that bird's name for your band? did you actually see real guillemots? Do you still have time for bird watching? 
I saw loads of real guillemots when I was younger, yes - I used to go on family holidays to loads of places on the British coast - Wales, Northumberland etc, and we'd always see them nesting on the cliffs. I haven't been bird watching in ages though. Things are a bit mad at the moment. Our name even comes up before the bird on Goggle. I feel a bit embarrassed, but I guess birds don't ever check the internet.

How was it working with Bryan Mills (ex Divine Comedy)?
Bryan's great. We co-produced the first EP together - this was while the band was still kind of forming, so I didn't really have the others to bounce ideas off so much, so Bryan took that role. He really encouraged me to keep a lot of real acoustic instruments on there, which was good, as I was always vying for electronic stuff. So we were always pushing and pulling, which I think made the whole thing sound more interesting. Bryan's got a great band now, The Kittens. He writes all these sort of lonely sea shanties that are just beautiful. 

How do you survive the big hype about the band?
You just ignore it really. I mean, we're not as hyped as, say, The Arctic Monkeys, so it's not that bad. But a thousand bands a year get hyped, so it's not like it means that much. We like our music, and that's enough fuel really - so we just keep checking ourselves and making sure we're not getting lazy or anything. 

What is your inspiration for lyrics? What comes first words or music?
Music usually comes first, but sometimes it's the words. It's different every time really. The magic of songs is you don't really understand how they come about - they just do.

With all your different musical backgrounds, how do you manage to make music together?
We don't know! We just know it feels right...from the very first time we all played together, it seemed like the most natural thing in the world, and it also seemed like, in the way each of us play, we'd been meant to find each other. It fits together like 4 pieces of a jigsaw. We just play and drift off into this dream world..

How would you describe what's going on, on stage during your performances?
Um....! Yeah, "um!".... um with a bit of pop , or pop with a bit or um....
